Big Data Visualisations DP World, Expo 2020 Dubai
At Expo 2020, DP World had a rare opportunity to make the invisible visible—transforming data into story, infrastructure into imagination, and global trade into something human and tangible. Open, in collaboration with 422 South, developed real-time, data-driven visualisations that revealed the scale and complexity of DP World’s global logistics in ways that were emotive, intuitive, and engaging.
Grounded in the Expo’s themes of mobility, sustainability, and opportunity, Open created large-scale digital installations that blended truthful expressions of DP World’s live data with a compelling visual language called the Five Faces of Flow. These animations turned raw shipping metrics into immersive journeys—from coffee beans in a farmer’s hand to global trade networks, from satellites to shipping cranes. They weren’t just infographics—they were stories of people, systems, and progress made visible.
This work was made possible by deep collaboration with DP World’s data teams, mining their live models and logistics insights to create digitally orchestrated experiences that felt alive, precise, and visionary.
The data visualisation pieces became one of the Pavilion’s most talked-about moments—capturing attention, driving engagement, and aligning DP World’s story with the wider narrative of Expo 2020. These installations helped audiences understand the scale, precision, and human impact of global trade, while quietly collecting insights and demonstrating leadership in smart logistics.
By turning complexity into beauty, DP World didn’t just show what it does—it showed how it sees the future.
